New York Stock Exchange

Things were quiet at the New York Stock Exchange today, due to the lack of economic data released. Stocks were trading in a narrow range today, as investors didn't get the confidence boost they needed to continue the rallies of last week. They were starting to edge lower this afternoon after being up a couple points in the morning; Investors will really tune into economic reports over the next couple of days. In corporate news, McDonalds reported that sales at stores open at least one year rose 4.8% last month, more than double analysts' expectations of a 2.1% gain. Same-store sales soared 10.5% in Asia, the Middle East and Africa, the fast food giant said the increase in sales was partially due to the Chinese New Year. McDonalds said that it's McCafe' coffee drinks along with hot sellers like it's recent Olympic Chicken McNugget Meal and other dollar menu items also helped push earnings higher. When AIG announced they reached a deal MetLife Inc. to sell one of its major foreign divisions, financial stocks rose, the deal will be worth $15.5 billion split various ways. Another deal to take place came from Royal Dutch Shell and Petro China; they have made a bid to buy Australia's Arrow Energy for $3 billion in cash and stock, Royal Dutch already has a 10% stake in Arrow Energy. At the end of the trading session stocks were down a couple of points, commodity prices were mixed. Gold fell $10.90 to $1,124.50 and crude oil rose $0.34 to $81.84. Bond prices fell, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note rose to 3.70 from 3.68 Friday.
