Boston Marathon Terrorist
American's were glued to news channels on Friday after U.S. authorities searched
for Dzokhar Tsarnaev, 19 years old Russian-born of Chechen background, as he
remained at large after his brother 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed
during a confrontation with police in Watertown, Massachusetts - both suspects
in Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing. The pair allegedly have been living in the
U.S. for at least a year as, legal permanent residents. “We believe this to be a
terrorist,” said Boston Police Chief Ed Davis. “We believe this to be a man
who’s come here to kill people. We need to get him in custody.” The cruel,
cowardly bombing by the two is responsible for killing three people and injuring
more than 170 people after planting two bombs at Monday’s Boston Marathon. U.S.
law-enforcement officials believed both brothers were involved in the fatal
shooting of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus police officer during
a chaotic series of events Thursday night. As the manhunt intensified for
Tsarnaev, officials initiated a broad lockdown of all public facilities
including the Boston subway system and bus system, in the Boston area.
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick urged people throughout Boston, Cambridge
and Watertown to shelter in place and stay indoors. The Federal Aviation
Administration closed the low-level airspace above roughly four miles in
northwest Greater Boston as the search goes continues. University of
Massachusetts, Dartmouth, where Tsarnaev was a student, was closed today. “Out
of an abundance of caution, the campus has been closed,” university spokesman
Robert Lamontagne said in an email. “Students, staff and faculty who have not
already evacuated have been told to shelter in place. No one is being allowed on
campus.” Authorities reported the violence with the two began around 10:30pm ET
Thursday night with the robbery of a 7-11 nearby Cambridge, MA. The two
terrorists fatally shot a MIT campus police officer, carjacked a Mercedes
sport-utility vehicle at gunpoint and held the vehicle’s owner hostage for
nearly 30 minutes before the owner was released at a gas station in Cambridge,
unharmed. Authorities said explosive devices were thrown from the car, during
the chase. A Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority officer was wounded
during the exchange of gunfire with the terrorists. Representative Peter King
(R., N.Y.), who sits on the House homeland security and intelligence committees,
said he hopes the fugitive is captured peacefully. “I’m hoping they get the
second guy alive and can interrogate him, so we can figure out, did they do it
on their own or are they affiliated with a larger group?” “We do not want people
congregating or waiting,” said Kurt Schwartz, the Massachusetts director of
emergency management. The situation, said State Police Colonel Timothy Alben,
Blackstone Management Partners, in a letter to the Dell board's special
committee on Friday, said they decided not to submit a formal buyout proposal
for Dell Inc. (DELL), due to "significant adverse issues" including the
“unprecedented 14 % market decline in PC volume in the first quarter of 2013,
its steepest drop in history." Blackstone also indicated "the rapidly eroding
financial profile of Dell" was reason to refrain from a bid.

In after hours trading on Thursday, shares of Vertex Pharmaceuticals’ (VRTX)
catapulted with a gain of over 50% in a matter of minutes, after the company
reported positive results from a treatment in testing stage for cystic fibrosis
[CF] patients. Into early afternoon trading session on Friday, shares were
higher by over 60% as results indicate tests make it more likely that a CF
treatment, ivacaftor will be successful once the drug goes into phase 3 testing
next year. The still unnamed drug referred to as VX-661 is in a phase 2 study by
pairing it with another CF medication it now markets. The combined use of the
two provide results that showed an improved lung function by as much as 9% via
daily doses over a 28-day period if at least 100 milligrams of VX-661 were used.
Patients with CF can face severely hampered lung function as the organ is
subject to infection and patients often end up having difficulty breathing. The
disease currently has no cure and often limits life span from 20 to 30 years.
