UPS
UPS reported that revenue fell 2.5% to
$12.38 billion in 2009. UPS may have seen a fall in revenue, but in the
fourth-quarter of '09 the shipping giant saw earnings rise almost three times
what they were in the fourth-quarter of last year. In the fourth-quarter profit
rose to $757 million, or $0.75 a share; compared to a profit of $254 million, or
$0.25 a share in the fourth-quarter last year, beating analysts' predictions;
UPS said a surge in holiday and international shipments were . Overall, in 2009
UPS' profit fell to $2.15 billion, or $2.14 a share, compared to 2008's profit
of $3 billion, or $2.94 a share, the company expects to see revenue rise once
economic recovery starts to pick up. UPS saw operating profits rise by 27%; also
in the quarter package volume rose by 1.4% to just over 1 billion packages. This
year's week before Christmas delivery volume was better than in 2008, volume was
higher than 22 million packages; the company was also able to make some cut
backs this year. UPS is planning on cutting 1,800 administrative and management
jobs in order to remold it's small package unit, which accounts for 60% of it's
revenue. UPS announced that they are forecasting 2010 earnings at $2.70 to $3.05
a share, analysts predict earnings of around $2.81 a share, shares of the
company were up $0.28 to $58.67 in morning trading.
Dow Chemical reported earnings of $87
million, or $0.08 a share in the fourth quarter, in the fourth-quarter of 2008
the company lost $1.55 billion, or $1.68 a share; sales at Dow Chemical rose 15%
to $12.5 billion. In morning trading shares of the company fell $1.08 to $27.55.
Stocks rose slightly after the National Association of Realtors reported a 1%
rise in sale contracts, in mid-morning trading the Dow was up almost 50 points.
Friday's latest unemployment numbers are the most anticipated economic data to
be released this week. Bond prices rose, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note
fell to 3.63 from 3.65 Monday. Commodities saw gains today as the dollar fell;
gold rose $13.20 to $1,118.20 an ounce and crude oil rose $2.85 to $77.28 a
barrel.

U.S. Retail Sales Down 1.5% in January versus December; National chain store
sales fell 1.5% in January, according to Redbook researchers; analysts expected
a 1.2% drop; Redbook Index showed seasonally adjusted sales was up 1% this
quarter from the same period last year; Redbook forecasted year-over-year
same-store growth of 1% and a month-over-month increase of 0.9% in
February; sales for the week were up 0.8% from a year earlier.
Pending Home Sales from National Association of Realtors [NAR]:
U.S. Pending Home Sales Index rose 1.0% to 96.6 in December; U.S. December
Pending Home Sales rose 10.9% from December 2008.
