Daily Market Commentary for February 3, 2010

Pfizer
Pfizer reported a 34% rise in revenue for
the fourth-quarter. Wednesday, the pharmaceutical company announced that revenue
in the fourth-quarter hit $16.54 billion, up from the $12.35 billion the company
earned in the fourth-quarter of 2008. Pfizer paid $68 billion to acquire
pharmaceutical company Wyeth on October 15, the companies largest acquisition
yet to date; products Wyeth made consisted of, pain relievers Advil, Anacin,
Centrum vitamins and various vaccinations. Pfizer said so far Wyeth products
accounted for $3.3 billion of fourth-quarter sales; in order to increase
revenue, Pfizer has already eliminated 4,200 jobs and plans on cutting costs
further. Overall in the quarter, prescription drugs sales and vaccination sales
were up 30%, totaling $14.61 billion. Pfizer is predicting revenue for the year
to be between $67 billion to $69 billion and earnings of $0.95 a share $1.10,
analysts are predicting revenue of $67.5 billion, and they expect earnings to be
higher than the company forecasted at $2.27 a share. Overall for 2009, Pfizer
reported a net income of $8.64 billion, up 7% from last year. Shares of the
company fell to $18.75 in premarket trading.
Stocks couldn't continue the rallies of the past two days, with news that the
service sector didn't rise as much as expected in January. AOL reported net
income of $1.4 million, up from a loss of $1.9 billion last year; analysts'
forecasted sales of $700 million. Time Warner reported sales and earnings rose
from last year's fourth quarter; the company showed earnings of $627 million, or
$0.53 a share, analysts' forecasted earnings of $0.52 a share. News Corp.
reported fiscal-second-quarter net income of $284 million, or $0.10 a share, up
from the net loss of $6.4 billion, or $2.45 per share, in the same period last
year. Revenue rose 10% to $8.7 billion, beating analysts' forecast of $8.2
billion. Bond prices fell, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note rose to 3.69
from 3.63 Tuesday. Commodity prices also fell; gold fell $5.60 to $1,112.40 an
ounce and crude oil fell $0.25 to $76.98 a barrel.
