Daily Market Commentary for February 4, 2010
 |
Retailers
Retailers were happy to see consumers
shopping in January. Sales tracker Thomson Reuters, who watches sales for 30
chain stores said same-store sales in January rose 3.3% compared to a 5.7% loss
last year; analysts were expecting to see a 2.5% gain. Analysts say the rise in
January sales is partially due to consumers using gift cards and taking
advantage of clearance items, however we have seen these numbers rise over the
past five months. Investors are wondering if this means consumer spending is
starting to recover, consumer spending suffered over the last year during the
economic downfall. Stores to see an improvement in sales were; Costco, who saw
an increase in sales by 8%, better than the 7.8% analysts' forecasted. Limited
Brands, which owns Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works saw a 6% rise in
same-store sales, analysts were expecting to see a rise by only 0.5%. Macy's
raised its' forecast to between $1.35-$1.37 in the fourth-quarter after the
retailer saw a 3.4% increase from last year's sales. Luxury department store
Nordstrom saw a 14% increase in sales, well above the 10% analysts' forecasted.
Some stores are still having a hard time getting sales to rise; department chain
J.C. Penny was one of the stores to suffer a decline in sales this month. Teen
apparel store Wet Seal saw a 3.7% decline in sales, and hot Topic saw sales fall
13% in January. Overall, economists were happy to see that retailers did well in
January, hopefully the numbers will continue to rise signaling the recession is
in fact over.
Cisco reported earnings of $1.85 billion, or $0.32 a share, up from $1.5
billion, or $0.26 a share, in the fourth-quarter a year ago. Revenue rose to
$9.8 billion from $9.1 billion, analysts expected to see a revenue of $9.4
billion. Stocks fell in the trading session, the Dow was down 200 points
mid-day. Bond prices rose, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note fell to 3.59
from 3.60 Wednesday. Commodity prices fell; gold fell $48.00 to $1,064.00 an
ounce, crude oil fell $3.97 to $73.01.
