Daily Market Commentary for February 9, 2010

Greece

Investor's confidence was restored today on talk that funds may be provided to Greece. Greece has been the topic on investor's minds, they have been closely watching news concerning the country to see what happens as far as their financial stability is concerned. Concerns started growing at the end of last week sending stocks into negative territory; Greece has a rising debt that many fear they will not be able to repay, it is rumored that the European Union will step in and help out by asking Greek debt holders to eliminate some of the debt owed by Greece. It also had rumors swirling the the European Central Bank was going to give some type of bailout to the struggling country however, policymakers said that Greece must get its own house in order as the European Central Bank cannot bail it out. Bank President Jean-Claude Trichets early departure from a meeting in Sydney with central bankers to attend a European Union leaders' summit, which lead many believe he is going to address the current situation. European stocks rose this morning along with the euro, which for days has fallen against the dollar. Investors will continue to watch the situation in Greece and depending on what happens, analysts say it could affect U.S. markets.

Company earning reports were strong today, Atlanta based Coca Cola reported sales rose 5.3% to $7.51 billion during the fourth-quarter, well above the 1% economists expected. Fourth-quarter profit soared 55% from a year earlier to $1.54 billion, or $0.66 a share, results were in line with what analysts' predicted. Coca-Cola saw a 3.5% rise in shares this morning. Another company to see good fourth-quarter results was McDonald's, the fast food mega giant reported a 2.6% surge in global same-store sales in January, surprisingly U.S. sales fell 0.7%. Stocks rose today, the Dow was up 150 points halfway through the trading session, bond prices continued their fall, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note rose to 3.64 from 3.59 Monday. Commodities rose; gold rose $5.80 to $1,072.00 an ounce and crude oil rose $1.94 to $73.83.

IBD/TIPP Economic Optimism:
U.S. February IBD/TIPP 6-Month Economic Outlook 48.7; U.S. February IBD/TIPP Economic Optimism Index 46.8 versus 48.8 in January.

Wholesale Inventories;
U.S. December Wholesale Inventories fell 0.8%; Expected to rise by 0.5%.
