Congressional Budget Office
Congressional Budget Office gave a report
on the growing deficit and economic recovery today. In the report the Budget
office said they estimate a deficit of $1.35 trillion for the current budget
year; they also expect the economy to recover at a slow pace, especially with
the unemployment rate reaching 10%. It is expected that the deficit will reach
$6 trillion over the next 10 years, and if new policies that are expected to be
passed do pass you can add another $2 trillion onto that. It is expected that
President Obama will introduce a three year spending freeze plan when he makes
his State of the Union address Wednesday, if approved the spending freeze would
include freezing $477 billion of domestic agency budget money; the agency's
yearly budgets are always approved by Congress. Many say the spending freeze
wouldn't have a very large impact on the deficit, over 10 years it would save up
to $250 billion, republicans say any type of spending cuts are important. Apple
reported better than expected quarterly earnings after the close yesterday, the
company said it was due to a high amount of sales of iPhones and Mac computers;
quarterly revenue rose to a record $15.7 billion. DuPont reported a rise in
revenue, they earned $441 million in the fourth quarter, up from a loss of $629
million a year ago; analysts projected quarterly earnings of $0.41 a
share. Verizon reported a fourth-quarter loss of $653 million, a drop from net
income of $1.24 billion in the same quarter a year-ago. Stocks rose today for
the second day in a row, the Dow was up 62 points mid-day. Bond prices rose, the
yield on the benchmark 10-year note fell to 3.61 from 3.63 Monday. Commodity
prices were mixed, gold rose $3.20 to $1,100.00 and crude oil fell $0.65 to
$74.60.
