Toyota Recall
Toyota recall has now expanded by 1.1 million more automobiles. Toyota's
latest recall is separate from one reported last week, last week's recall
affected 2.3 million vehicles due to accelerator pedals sticking, not related to
floor mats; models included, 2007-2010 Toyota Camry, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2004-2009
Prius, 2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Tundra and the 2007-2010 Lexus ES350, 2006-2010
and the 2006-2010 IS250 and IS350. The latest recall is reportedly due to gas
pedals getting caught on the edge of the floor mat causing the vehicle to
accelerate uncontrollably, like the recall in late 2009; owners are supposed to
call a Toyota dealer right away and stop driving the vehicle if they experience
slowness or sticking in the gas pedal. Affected Models are the 2005-2010 Avalon;
2009-2010 Corolla, Matrix, Pontiac Vibe and the RAV4; 2010 Highlander; the
2008-2010 Sequoia; 2007-2010 Tundra trucks and some 2007-2010 Camry's. Now
recalls are being broadened to China and Europe; Toyota announced they will
recall 75,500 RAV4 SUVs' that were manufactured in China between March
2009 and January 2010 for the same problem, the recall will take effect in
February. Toyota is unsure of the number of vehicles being recalled in Europe at
this time, in a statement Toyota said, "a running change in production using
different parts has already been implemented model-by-model in the European
production, therefore there is no need or intention to stop production in
Europe." These recalls are hurting the #1 automaker, analysts estimate that
Toyota could face as much as $500 million a week in losses until the problem is
fixed, in the statement the automaker sad the will replace gas pedals and floor
mats on affected vehicles.
In corporate news; 3M reported strong fourth quarter earnings, they earned $935
million, or $1.30 a share in the fourth quarter, up from $536 million, or $0.77
a share in the fourth quarter a year-ago. Wall Street was looking for $1.20 per
share, as far as a 2010 outlook, the company raised earning forecasts to $4.90 -
$5.10 a share. Ford also reported strong earnings, the automaker said they
earned $2.7 billion in 2009 or $0.86 a share, analysts expected a loss of $0.31
a share. This is the first time since 2005 that Ford has seen a profitable year,
the company said in the fourth quarter they earned $0.43 a share, up from the
$1.40 they lost in the fourth quarter a year ago. Procter & Gamble reported they
will earn an adjusted profit of $3.53 to $3.63 in 2010, results were better than
analysts expected; the company said a higher profit was due to cost cuts the
company made. Stocks were falling in today's trading session, the Dow was down
