Daily Market Commentary for July 17, 2009

U.S. Department of Commerce:

U.S. Department of Commerce released better than expected data on new home sales. Housing starts rose 3.6% to 582,000 in June, it's highest level since November 2008 and starts of single- family homes rose 14.4% to 470,000 in June. Building permits also rose by 8.7% to 563,000 it's highest level since December, building permits are a good indicator of future new construction, which could be signs that the economy might recover sooner than expected. With houses being at these low of prices it is attracting more and more people, first time buyers are receiving a tax credit of 10% of the buying price, with an $8,000 cap. With reasonably good economic data released, and such strong rallies earlier in the week it's surprising to see traders standing back cautiously like they have the past two days. There was some signs of activity in the markets this morning, with stocks flat lining in the afternoon trading was rather slow, U.S. markets showed weakness this afternoon with Global markets stronger.

Economic data released today:

Building Permits:
Building Permits rose 8.7% to 563,000 rate in June.

Housing Starts:
U.S. June Housing Starts rose 3.6% to 582,000 compared to consensus of unchanged; May Housing Starts Revised to a gain of 17.3% from an increase by 17.2%; June Single-Family Starts rose 14.4 striking it's largest rise in four years.
