Daily Market Commentary for July 19, 2010

National Association of Home Builders

Stocks continued to slowly climb despite some disappointing news from the National Association of Home Builders. This morning the Association said that homebuilder confidence fell to a 15-month low. July's housing market Index fell two points to 14; the Association credits the decline to continued high unemployment numbers, and very tight credit. Once we see the economy continue to get better, unemployment numbers will go down, credit will loosen up and people will start buying houses again. Today's earnings helped push stocks higher. Halliburton reported better than expected earnings for the second quarter; they said earnings were at $480 million, or $0.53 per share, up from $262 million in the same quarter a year ago. Revenue rose to $4.39 billion, from $3.49 billion in the first quarter; analysts were predicting revenue to come in at $4.08 billion. Delta also reported better than expected earnings; the airline's earnings were the best since 2000. They reported earnings of $467 million, or $0.55 per share, the company saw a loss of $257 million in the same quarter a year ago. Delta President ED Bastian said in a statement, "We are seeing strong improvements in these early stages of the economic recovery and believe there's room for more revenue growth as the economy continues to stabilize." Stocks continued their rise through the afternoon; with just a half hour left in the trading session, the Dow was up over 45 points. Investors are anxious to see the rest of this week's reports. Commodity prices rose; gold fell $6.30 to $1,181.70 and crude oil rose $0.53 to $76.54 per barrel.
