European News
Stocks rose triple digits on positive
European news and better than expected earnings. It was reported today that the
European composite index rose to 56.6 in July from 55.6 in June. Investors were
surprised to see the news; in recent months
Europe was being named as the reason the markets were falling. Everyone worried
that European countries were in severe debt and wouldn't be able to pay it; they
feared it would hurt a global recovery. The growth reported today was much
unexpected, as analysts' predicted the country could be headed for a recession.
European markets got a boost from today's report. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 1%,
DAX in Germany rose 1.6% and France's CAC 40 also rose, by 1.8% this morning.
Stocks had managed to gain over 200 points going into the afternoon; Investors
were impressed with today's earning reports. UPS was today's big winner, the
company reported earnings almost double what analysts were predicting. UPS
reported a second quarter net income of $845 million, or $0.84 per share;
analysts were expecting $0.77 per share. Other companies to report better than
expected earnings were AT&T and 3M; AT&T reported earnings of $0.61 per share,
better than the $0.57 per share analysts were expecting. Stocks continued to
rise throughout the session; with just under an hour left, the Dow was up over
220 points. Commodity prices rose; gold rose $3.90 to $1,195.50 and crude oil
rose $2.74 to $79.30 per barrel.
