Ford Vehicles

With more people buying revamped Ford vehicles, the automaker reported better than expected earnings. Ford reported earnings of $2.7 billion, or $0.68 per share in the second quarter, making it the best quarter in six years. Analysts' were expecting the company to earn $0.40 per share; this is the fourth straight quarter the company posted profits. Revenue rose to $31.3 billion, up 17% from the $26.8 billion a year ago. Ford CEO Alan Mulally said in a statement today, "We are ahead of where we thought we would be despite the still-challenging business conditions, we remain on track to deliver solid profits and positive automotive operating-related cash flow for 2010, and we expect even better financial results in 2011." People are happy to see for succeed; they were the only major U.S. automaker to not receive any funding in 2009. Ford suffered four years worth of losses; last year alone the automaker lost $638 million in operating losses. Other major companies to report earnings today were American Express, who reported second quarter earnings of $1 billion, or $0.84 a share, beating analysts' expectations. Microsoft also reported better than expected earnings for the quarter. They reported revenue of $16.04 billion, or $0.51 per share; analysts were expecting earnings of $0.46 per share. Stocks were falling early in the session, but managed to gain just over 90 points. The Dow was up 93 points with a half hour left in the trading week. Commodity prices were mixed; gold fell $7.80 to $1,187.70 and crude oil fell $0.32 to $78.98 per barrel.
