Consumer Confidence
Stocks plummeted today after new data shows an
unexpected decrease in consumer confidence for the month of June. Housing
sector also on the downside, foreclosure rate leaped in the first quarter from
the previous one, due to consumers with good credit losing jobs. After endless
positive economic data released in the months prior investors thought we'd seen
the worst, but now they aren't expecting the rebound to be quite as strong.
Investors pay a lot of attention to consumer confidence because consumer
spending accounts for more than two-thirds of economic activity, so this isn't
the news analysts were looking for, the news release made for an interesting
trading day, with little action in the afternoon.
