Christopher Dodd

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd said Thursday, he will move ahead with financial regulation regardless of bipartisan backing. Chairman Dodd has been negotiating with Bob Corker, a GOP committee member from Tennessee on a bipartisan bill for over a month. In a statement, Dodd said "I have been fortunate to have a strong partner in Senator Corker and my new proposal will reflect his input and the good work done by many of our colleagues," Dodd said. "Our talks will continue and it is still our hope to come to agreement on a strong bill all of the Senate can be proud to support." Senator Corker said that the "decision was very disappointing." Corker said that he and Dodd had made important progress and the two of them agreed on issues such as consumer protections, one of the issues that many tend to disagree on most. "He made me aware that with reconciliation coming, he felt a need to go ahead and, regardless of where we were in negotiations to put forth a bill on Monday." Stocks struggled today after China reported a rise in inflation. China reported the inflation rate rose to 2.7 % in February from 1.5% in January; investors worry the sudden rise in inflation will cause them to raise interest rates. Investors got a mixed report from the Labor Department when they gave their weekly report on the number of Americans filing for first time unemployment benefits. The Department said new claims actually fell to 462,000 from a revised 468,000 the previous week, but missed analysts' predictions of 460,000. However, continuing claims rose to 4,558,000, up 37,000 from last week's reading of 4,521,000, analysts predicted 4,500,000 claims. Over the past four days stocks have been trading in tight range, with light volume. With a little over an hour left in the session the Dow was only up 4 points. Commodity prices were mixed, gold stayed at $1,108.10 and crude oil rose $0.12 to $82.21. Bond prices fell, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note rose to 3.72 from 3.71 Wednesday.
