Daily Market Commentary for March 2, 2010
 |
Ford Sales
Ford sales were up in February, the automaker
also had better sales than rival GM. Ford reported a 43% increase in sales, as
compared to the same period last year, analysts estimated a 35% increase. Ford's
results were also up 22% compared to January. The company said there was a
higher demand from rental-car companies and other corporate fleets, Ford's fleet
sales surged 74% over February of last year; February's rise was the 16th
monthly increase out of 17 months for Ford. The auto industry took a hard hit
last year, it was one the worst months for the industry in 19 years. Ford is in
the process of selling it's Volvo division, but with those sales included, Ford
outsold GM for the first time in more than a decade. It is believed Ford will be
the No. 1 seller in the U.S. for the month of February, passing the No. 1
current leader, Toyota. Toyota took a hit in
sales due to the recent recall problems; it is projected that Toyota's sales
were down 10% from last year. GM reported sales only rose 12% from the same
period last year, analysts estimated sales would be around double than reported.
Overall industry sales are expected to be up about 10% to 14% from a year ago.
Stocks rose most of the trading session, once
news was reported that Greece will not default on debt owed. Near the end of the
trading session stocks lost almost all of the gains of the day. Investors didn't
get any economic data today to help boost confidence, helping out with the
decline. Commodity prices saw gains, gold rose $19.10 to $1,137.40 and crude oil
rose $1.01 to $79.71. Bond prices rose, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note
fell to 3.60 from 3.60 Monday.
Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City
President Thomas M. Hoenig;
Still opposes Fed's extended low rates
pledge; Fed shouldn't give certainty on rate outlook; Fed should raise rates
'sooner rather than later'; Funds rate could rise and still support growth;
'Inflation is very low'; Fed may need to lift rates amid high unemployment; Zero
percent interest rates invite future excesses; End of Fed MBS buying shouldn't
have much market impact.
