Pending Home Sales
Stocks were inching higher in morning
trading, despite reports that pending home sales fell in January. The National
Association of Realtors reported this morning that the
pending home sales index fell 7.6% in January, to a reading of 90.4. analysts
were surprised by the fall, they predicted the index would rise to 97.6. This
months reading was the lowest the index has fallen since last April. A drop in
the number of people buying used homes put a halt on investors confidence boost
from the retail sales report released earlier. Every time investors get a bad
report it makes them concerned about the economy's recovery, everyone's
attention will be focused on the big report tomorrow from the Labor Department;
a key way of tracking economic conditions. Analysts are expecting employers to
have cut around 65,000 jobs from payrolls in February, following a cut by 20,000
in January. It is also expected that the unemployment rate will rise to 9.8%
from 9.7% in January. Some good news did come today from retailers who reported
better than expected rise in sales. Retail sales rose by 4%; some stores to post
better than expected sales were Limited Brands, Macy's and Target. This month
was the sixth month in a row that same-store sales rose. At the end of the
trading session stocks managed to hang onto their gains, Commodity prices
however fell. Gold fell $9.60 to $1,133.70 and crude oil fell $0.33 to $80.54.
Bond prices rose, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note fell to 3.60 from 3.62
Wednesday.
