Trade Deficit
Stocks rose slightly today as the Commerce
department reported a larger-than-expected increase in the trade deficit,
topping analysts' expectations. The U.S. trade deficit widened by 18.2% in
September to $36.5 billion, the highest level since January, analysts' expected
a reading of $32.8 billion. A wider deficit was due to a big rise in imports,
along with the rising number of oil shipments, this was the largest increase in
the monthly trade gap since February 1999. U.S.'s trade deficit with China
widened to $22.1 billion, the largest amount since October 2008. The deficit for
this year totals $274.58 billion, down from $551.44 billion in the first two
quarters of 2008. It is nice to see the trade deficit rise because when the
markets crashed last year, world trade nearly stopped; in May the deficit was at
it's lowest pointy since November 1999. Analysts say that as the economy
recovers, imports and trade should as well. Investors were happy with the news
and sent stocks higher after yesterdays losses, yesterday's losses broke stocks
six day rally. In company news, teenage retailer Abercrombie & Fitch reported
net income fell to $38.8 million, or $0.44 per share, in the third quarter from
$63.9 million, or $0.72 per share, a year earlier. Net sales fell 15% to $765.4
million as same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, fell 22%.
J.C. Penney Co. reported a 78% drop in its third-quarter earnings due to a large
expense for its pension plan. J.C. Penny said Friday it earned $27 million, or
$0.11 per share, the department store earned $124 million, or $0.56 per share,
in the year-ago period. Stocks continued their climb in the afternoon, bond
prices rose, the yield on the benchmark 10- year Treasury note fell to 3.42 from
3.44 Thursday, the dollar also fell against other currencies.
