Bear Market
Stocks opened lower today extending the
two-day bear market; investors focused their attention towards the technology
sector, they showed concern when Dell, the third largest PC maker reported
disappointing earnings. Stocks have been falling for the past two days, showing
that investors are worried about the state of the economy's recovery. There
hasn't been much good news out of the housing market to help push stocks higher.
Dell who recently lost it's number 2 ranking to Taiwan made Acer, reported that
shares fell $1.27, or 8%, to $14.60. Dell said, "third-quarter revenue was
adversely affected by the timing of Windows 7", the company expects to see
stronger sales in the fourth quarter. Investors were also watching the dollar,
it was rising against other major currencies at the beginning of the trading
session. Labor Department reported that the jobless rates increased in 29
states, thirteen states reported unemployment rates above the 10.2% national
average in October. Unemployment was found to be the highest in the western part
of the country, they reported a jobless rate of 10.8%, and the northeast
reported the lowest unemployment rate at 9%, the rate stayed unchanged from the
previous month. The dollar, which usually moves stocks in the opposite direction
has seen gains over the past two days after months of falling. Commodities are
usually hurt by the dollar rising, oil prices fell along with gold prices after
hitting another high yesterday. Gold has been on the rise for weeks and reached
$1,141.90 an ounce at the end of the trading day yesterday, it was down $1.80
this morning, but turned around and ended the day at $1,146.80. Bond prices were
fell, the yield on the benchmark 10-year note rose to 3.36 from 3.34 Thursday.
