any, Berkshire Hathaway announced Tuesday it will purchase railroad operating company Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp; Buffett's company will spend a reported $34 billion. Berkshire already has a 22% stake in the company, Berkshire said it would acquire the remaining 77.4% of the company and will pay in a cash-and-stock offer worth $100 per share. Shareholders will have the option whether they want to exchange their stock for a cash payment of $100 per share or receive Berkshire Class A or Class B common stock. "Our country's future prosperity depends on its having an efficient and well-maintained rail system," said Buffett. He also commented, "Most important of all, however, it's an all-in wager on the economic future of the United States. I love these bets." Boards from both sides approved the deal, making it the biggest attainment Berkshire Hathaway Inc has ever made. Berkshire Hathaway's colossal portfolio includes companies such as auto insurance company Geico, Fruit of the Loom and see's candy are all subsidiaries of the firm. Berkshire also owns MidAmerican Energy Holdings, a power company controller in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest, Burlington Northern Santa Fe is the second-largest railroad in the country, so purchasing the railroad could be part of Buffett's strategic plan, their tracks run right through both regions, it is a main supply route for delivering coal to power plants. Burlington Northern saw shares rise 29% to $98.13 upon the announcement. Stocks fell in the trading session today as global markets showed weakness making investors cautious, analysts think trading will continue its choppy pattern. Recovering some of its losses was the dollar, which rose against the yen and the euro. Oil prices rose along with gold. Bond prices fell, the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose to 3.47 from 3.42 Monday.

U.S. Factory Orders rose 0.9% in September compared to consensus of an increase by 0.8%; September Factory Orders, Excluding Transportation, rose 0.8%; September Factory Orders, Excluding Defense, rose 0.7%; September Durable Goods Revised to rise 1.4% from an increase by 1.0%; August Factory Orders Unrevised at -0.8%.
