McDonalds
McDonald's latest report on third quarter
earnings prove the recession hasn't hurt the world's largest fast food chain.
McDonalds said sales at restaurants open at least one year were down 0.1%,
better than 0.5% decline analysts had forecasted. The Company did see stronger
growth globally, Sales in Europe rose 6.4% and 4.7% in Asia, the Middle East and
Africa. Total sales rose 10.3% and were up 5.2%, excluding currency
translations, McDonald's has seen stronger sales in the U.S. during the
recession as customers are more likely to buy lower priced food, rather than
splurge on restaurant prices. In the U.S. the company saw a higher demand for
angus burgers and dollar menu items, not to mention a high demand for the
company's new McCafe items. In Europe premium or mid range menu items did better
than others while in Asia and the Middle East breakfast and value menu options
were more successful. Shares of the company rose almost 1% after the report.
Stocks were on the rise today and with no data being released investors focused
their attention on merger deals currently in negotiations. Kraft announced they
placed a $16.3 billion bid Monday for British candy maker Cadbury, the company
rejected Kraft's initial bid of $16.7 billion in early September, they again
turned down the well known food company. Other companies in talks are Comcast
and GE, the two have reportedly made an agreement on NBC Universal's worth.
Comcast is working on gaining control of NBC Universal. As stocks rose, bond
prices rose, the yield on the benchmark 10- year Treasury note fell to 3.48 from
3.50 Friday. Commodities such as gold and oil both rose in the trading session,
the dollar however fell against other currencies.
