United States Credit Outlook Raised

United States Credit Outlook Raised United States Credit Outlook Raised

Standard & Poor's Ratings Services on Monday revised its outlook on United States sovereign credit outlook to "stable" from "negative", and put the likelihood of a near-term downgrade of the rating at "less than one in three. During summer 2011, S&P downgraded the United States to "AA+" from top-rated "AAA." To restore the United States to the AAA rating would take two things: a credible plan to reduce deficits over the long run and clear indication that brinksmanship is a thing of the past, S&P's top U.S. analyst Nikola Swann said. S&P noted that the Federal Reserve has "both the strong ability and willingness to support sustainable economic growth and to attenuate major economic or financial shocks." S&P cited the Fed's "timely and effective actions" that mitigated the effects of the deep recession in 2008 and 2009. S&P warned that the ability of politicians to address the country's medium-term fiscal challenges remains hampered by partisan bickering in Washington and "fundamentally opposing views by the two main political parties on the optimal size of government. "The stable outlook indicates our appraisal that some of the downside risks to our 'AA+' rating on the US have receded to the point that the likelihood that we will lower the rating in the near term is less than one in three. We do not see material risks to our favorable view of the flexibility and efficacy of US monetary policy. We believe the US economic performance will match or exceed its peers' in the coming years," the agency concludes.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) unveiled a music streaming service on Monday, set to launch during fall of 2013. The service is a key component of overhauled mobile software that Apple called the most revolutionary re-design of its operating system since the iPhone was introduced in 2007. iTunes Radio is a highly anticipated new feature in the revamped iOS mobile platform, is free with ads across many Apple devices including iPhones, iPads and Apple TV and allows listeners to customize their own radio stations by genre or tune in to some 200 featured stations. New product on the front line from Apple to be available in the fall - iOS 7 - the smartphone and tablet platform redesigned by resident creative honcho Jony Ive comes with a new edge-to-edge look that uses translucency to highlight underlying content, new typefaces and new icons.

Edward Snowden, 29-year-old consultant at technology consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton (BAH), is responsible for leaking secret information about U.S. surveillance programs to draw attention to U.S. surveillance of its own citizens. He was held up in Hong Kong for several days after going off the radar, becoming vulnerable to possible criminal prosecution. Snowden said he was a former employee of the Central Intelligence Agency.

During Q1 2013 per national statistics institute Istat, the economy in Italy contracted more than expected, shrinking 0.6% in seasonally-adjusted real terms compared with previous three months as activity fell in all sectors except farming. Italian GDP contracted 2.4% during Q1 - led by domestic weakness, with fixed business investments falling 3.3% from Q4 2012. During Q1 household spending fell 0.5% and 3.4% on the year; government spending increased 0.1% and declined 0.8% on the year; exports declined 1.9% from previous three months for the first quarterly drop in four years and, imports fell 1.6% and 5.2% on the year. Italy is the euro zone's third-largest country.

The Conference Board's Employment trends index that tracks U.S. employment trends, reportedly rose to 111.76 from 111.11 in April. "While the increase in the Employment Trends Index in May erased the small declines of the previous two months, overall, the growth in the ETI has remained weak," said Gad Levanon, director of macroeconomic research at the Conference Board. "Taken together with other recent indicators of economic activity, the ETI is suggesting that a significant improvement in employment growth is unlikely this summer."
