U.S. Markets Got Hammered Today
U.S. Markets Got Hammered Today

U.S. Markets got hammered today with Dow Jones Industrial Average off over 101 points; Nasdaq off by 35 points and S&P 500 shed over 12 points into the closing bell on Wall Street.

Chicago Fed's national activity index released today showed that both the 'three' and 'one' month indexes - which are weighted averages of 85 economic indicators - were less negative in June. During May, the three-month average rose to -0.20 from -0.38 and the one-month index rose to -0.15 from -0.48. A zero reading is associated with trend growth, while a reading below -0.70 signals the increasing likelihood a recession has begun.

On Monday, Spanish and Italian market regulators imposed a ban on short selling of stocks in the wake of steep losses for equities markets in Europe. On the website of Spain's market regulator, CNMV, the ban could last for three months or until the close of markets on Oct. 23 at which time, the ban could be renewed or lifted as required. On the website of Italy's financial regulator, Consob, said its ban, which is for financial stocks only, would last until the end of this week.

DigitalGlobe (DGI) agreed to acquire fellow satellite imagery company GeoEye (GEOY) for approximately $20.27 a share or about $453 million. Including assumption of debt, the two companies valued the transaction at nearly $900 million. GeoEye Chief Executive Matt O'Connell said, "We are excited to be joining forces with DigitalGlobe as we believe this transaction represents the best path forward for our shareowners, our customers, and ultimately, the taxpayer." Pending regulatory and shareholder approvals, the deal is expected to close late in tQ4 2012 or early in 2013. Upon completion of the deal, DigitalGlobe shareholders will own about 66% and GeoEye shareholders will hold 34% of the combined company, which will be headquartered in Colorado.Chief financial officer of DigitalGlobe Yancey Spruill said about Q2 financial results on July 31, "I will say that Q2 finished well and we feel good about the progress we are making in 2012.”

Unprecedented sanctions were announced Monday morning by the NCAA, against Pennsylvania State University, including fining the university $60 million and banning the school from bowl games for four years. The NCAA stopped short of a full suspension of Penn State’s football program, in response to the child-abuse scandal involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky. NCAA President Mark Emmert said in a press conference, “The Penn State case has provoked in all of us a deeply emotional response and shaken our confidence in many ways.” Emmert said the sanctions were intended to help Penn State “rebuild a culture that went terribly awry.” The sanctions by the collegiate-sports organization include vacating all of Penn State’s wins from 1998 to 2011 plus, reducing scholarships at Penn State. Emmert said Penn State will need to work with an athletic integrity monitor and that the NCAA could impose further sanctions following the resolution of ongoing criminal proceedings against former university administrators. The $60 million fine, which is equal to a one year’s gross revenue of the football team, will be used to create an endowment to try to help prevent child sex abuse. The moves were expected to deal a serious blow to one of the nation’s best-known college sports teams historically and follow a report earlier this month from former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Louis Freeh, commissioned by trustees that found the late head football coach Joe Paterno as well as other university officials didn’t act on allegations of sexual abuse involving Mr. Sandusky. Sandusky was convicted in June on 45 counts related to abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period, starting in 1994. Penn State removed a seven-foot statue of Paterno outside Penn State’s Beaver Stadium on Sunday which, came to be an “obstacle to healing,” per the university’s president, Rodney Erickson. Erickson, who took over as Penn State’s president after Graham Spanier was ousted in November, said in a statement that he opted to remove the statue of Mr. Paterno, over the objections of many alumni, because it had become a “lightning rod of controversy.” Paterno family said on Sunday that removing the statue “does not serve the victims of Jerry Sandusky’s horrible crimes or help heal the Penn State Community.” “This case involves tragic and tragically unnecessary circumstances,” Mr. Emmert said. Erickson said a “grave danger” of university sports programs is that they “can become too big to fail, indeed too big to even challenge.” Penn State’s football program which began more than a century ago, has had a broad economic and cultural impact beyond the university and the rural center of Pennsylvania for decades. Under Paterno, the Penn State Nittany Lions won two national championships, three Big Ten titles and 24 bowl games. Penn State alumni travel from around the country to attend games at Beaver Stadium on campus in State College, Pa., which seats 107,000 fans and is one of the largest stadiums in the nation. According to a report commissioned by the university several years prior to the child sex-abuse scandal, in 2009, Penn State football program spurred $161.5 million in economic activity statewide which included $70.2 million in direct economic activity, such as ticket and merchandise sales. Reportedly during 2009, Penn State football program directly supported 1,130 jobs, including office administration, coaching staff and assistants, box office, concessions, ushers, and parking attendants.
